Is it unheard of to feel intensified pain when taking narcotic painkillers?

Ever since I can remember, anytime I've been prescribed narcotic painkillers I've had an adverse effect. Instead of getting hazy and the pain subsiding as I've been lead to believe is normal, the pain intensifies and I'm unable to focus on anything else. Obviously this has turned me off of pain meds. I tried looking up to see how common it is, but the only articles I've found are associated with addiction.
